[Review] Edifier G4 Gaming Headphones.

The Edifier G4 is actually in the market for quite some time. The original retail price is supposed to be about RM 239 – RM 249 but if you buy it now, you can actually get it for just RM 199.90 via Edifier’s official online store in Lazada & Shopee.

What I like about the brand ‘Edifier’ in general is, their products are quite affordable and delivers great sound quality. So will the G4 be up to my expectations? Let’s see.

I actually wanted to skip this section because there was only the gaming headphones & operating instruction inside. Well, what else can you expect to get? Free tickets to Timbuktu? I wish the same too but for something that costs less than RM 200, I think I am expecting too much :p

I am actually preparing a video review of the G4 and in that video, I will upload my entire unboxing session, just in case if you still want to see how many seals were there, how to open the box etc :p

Before unboxing the headphones, my initial plan was to give it away after doing the review because I already have an expensive wireless headphones at home. However, ever since I started using the G4, my expensive wireless headset is now sleeping in the drawer. Probably I might give that one away instead of the G4.

The first thing that you will notice the moment you plug-in your headphones to your PC are the light rings on the sides and on the mic. They are really cool and makes the earphones rugged and hardcore. I’ve got the green version which is even more awesome because I personally think it is better than the red/black or the blue/white version. Anyway, different people might have different taste bro.

Comfort wise, the G4 is one of the most comfortable headphones that I’ve ever used. The ear cushions are very soft and comfortable. I also realised that my ears don’t sweat easily while using the G4 and I don’t really feel hot on my ears unless I continuously use it for long hours.

The adjustable headband is also quite big, which means it can fit you well unless you have an afro hairstyle, or you just came from Mars. There is a soft cushion on the headband as well but I don’t see a need for it. Probably if you are bald (and handsome), you might find that useful.

I don’t know whether this is good or not but let’s say my room door is closed and I am listening to music (not very loud), I won’t be able to hear if anyone calls me or knocks my room door. Even when my friend is right next to me and talking to me, I cannot hear a single thing.

If you are wondering why would that be bad, it is because I’ve missed few important calls due to this and the best part is, the phone was right next to me.

Anyway, I’ve found a solution for that. Nowadays, I put my phone right in front of me whenever I am listening to music or playing games. That helps quite a bit.

I am really glad Edifier has made the mic retractable on the G4 and that is one of the reason why I am using it as my main headset. The mic is good for gaming or even for VoIP calls e.g. skype or Fb calls. I don’t really recommend you to use it for any kind of voice recording e.g. video voice-over because it is an omnidirectional mic and it captures all the surrounding sound as well. Anyway, it is a gaming headphone and the mic is good for what it is meant for. I have no complaint about it.

The Edifier G4 comes with vibration effect which is meant to pump up your gaming experience. So when you are playing some kind of shooting game (just as an example), you can hear as well as ‘feel’ the shooting sound. That’s quite cool because it brought my gaming experience to a whole new level. I don’t know how to explain this in words because it is something that you must experience yourself in order to understand. It actually gives a ‘boom’ feel and I use it not only for gaming, but while listening to music as well.

To some of you, it might be annoying, especially when listening to some mellow music. In that case, you can easily turn off the ‘boom’ effect. Basically the ‘boom’ effect is just some kind of pumped up bass and you definitely don’t need that kind of bass level for all musics.

Another reason why I choose to keep the G4 is because of the remote. I seriously wanted an earphone that has a physical volume adjuster and I’m glad the G4 has it. There is also a on/off switch, mic switch and the vibrator switch on the remote.

When you press the mic switch, you will realise that the light on the mic goes off. So that indicates whether your mic is turned on or off.

This is probably one of the downside of using the G4 where the exterior of the earcup area are made of glossy plastic. Firstly it attracts smudges / oil stains and secondly, scratches are more visible on a glossy surface compared to a matte one. Even the remote is made of glossy plastic and mine already have several visible scratches.

Also, if you don’t like an USB headphones for any reason, that could be a turn off as well. I personally have no complaints about is because my PC’s built-in sound card is crap. So in a way, I am happy with the G4 because it uses its own sound card and the sound quality is awesome.
